What’s Your Favorite Type of Event?

I get asked this question a lot and I’m never really sure how to answer. Weddings can be a lot of work and really stressful but they can also be a lot of fun. Corporate events and parties can be really entertaining but they also require the DJ to work really hard to find the music that everyone wants to hear. Race events are always outside and it’s nice to be outside using our large line array system. Races are also less structured as far as what needs to be played. This allows the DJ to be creative and try out stuff they wouldn’t normally try at a wedding or special event. However, race events are typically in the morning and this means a 2 or 3 AM wakeup call and really long days.

I guess you can say that my favorite type of event is an event where people are enjoying themselves. We do events for the seniors here in Suffolk through the Parks and Rec Department and they are always a lot of fun. The folks are there because they want to be there, they want to dance, even if they can only shuffle their feet around, they want to dance and have fun.

I did a holiday party for them back in December and the first part of the event I played a lot of Christmas and holiday music but not a lot of the music you typically hear on the radio. I played a lot of songs from when they were young and I also played a lot of R&B artists that don’t get a lot of radio time. I received a lot of compliments and a lot of requests for songs I had never heard before!

After lunch I started playing some of their favorite line dance songs. As soon as they hear the Mississippi Cha Cha Slide or the Cupid Shuffle, they cheer and quickly make their way to the dance floor. Once they are there I get to play some real “grown folks” dance music. Aretha Franklin, Earth Wind and Fire, Cameo and I can even slide some new stuff like R. Kelly Happy People, Beyonce and maybe even some Mary J. Blige and even if they hadn’t heard the song before, they are out there dancing, smiling and having a great time.

That’s what I love about my job. I have the best seat in the house to watch people forget about their problems, forget about their troubles and just dance with friends and family. For those few hours, nothing else matters. Maybe it’s wedding, maybe it’s a special event or a race, maybe it’s just a Wednesday afternoon party. An event where people are having fun and enjoying the moment, that’s my favorite type of event.
